without tantrums, pleading, spending hours in the bathroom, or months of managing accidents.
"Wait until after the age of three"
"Whatever you do, don't wait until after three"
"Go bare bottom"
"Wait until they show interest"
"Give them treats"
"Whatever you do, don't bribe them!"
My name is Dr. Amanda Keating, and I'm a licensed psychologist, board certified behavior analyst, and a mom.
I help parents feel confident about their toilet training.
After years of working with children and adults with developmental disabilities to achieve independent toileting, I began helping everyday moms and dads potty train their toddlers in as little as 3 to 4 hours.
Surprising though, my biggest challenge, was my own child. I had hoped, he'd just take to it. Some do. He didn't. He hated the bathroom, the mini potty we bought him, and the noise of the toilet flushing. The paper, however.... he loved it- for everything but his bottom.
But, I was lucky, and once I got my head in the game, we were ready. I already knew how to "play" our way to toileting success. We went from diapers to independent toileting in less than a weekend.
There's no reason you can't enjoy and celebrate the achievement of potty training, just like first steps or first words.
No one wants to upset their child unnecessarily, and many parents anticipate a power struggle. You might worry that the methods described in a book might not work for your child, and like so many parents, you may have already tried potty training and decided to give up after a failed attempt.
And the pressure!
More and more preschool classes are requiring children to be potty trained before they can be enrolled. You may have been asked when you plan to potty train by friends, in-laws, and even your spouse.
Aside from outside pressure, you might also be hoping to escape the cost of staying in diapers. When we last said goodbye to Size 7 Pampers, we were still using approximately 8 diapers a day. That's 240 (ish) diapers a month. I was paying at least $145 dollars a month in diapers and wipes. Another 6 months in diapers is over $870 dollars per child.
Not to mention the time. Time estimates are 5 minutes from start to finish per diaper. If you also changed 8 diapers a day, you're spending 20 hours a month changing diapers.
-And the books. I've read over 25 potty training books. It's my thing. I can tell you, many of them have general advice, some of which is not at all based in what we know about children, their development, and what results in good toilet training outcomes for children. ALL of them will have complaints from some parents, even those I would recommend. Of course they would. Nothing works for everyone without some refinement.
As a person who has had a few "one size fits all" garments that did not remotely fit, I can assure you of this.
Every family and child is unique.
We wanted to help parents eliminate the guesswork without having to actually get a Ph.D. in potty training so we developed Potty U.
At Potty University (Potty U), we provide parents with a crystal clear road map to determine if they and their child are ready for potty training. Did you know there are more than 20 signs of readiness for potty training typically developing children published in scientific journals? Are you aware that you can rate your bowel movements according to a scientific scale? Did you know that age isn't generally a great indicator of readiness?
When children are ready, we make sure they parents know exactly how to introduce the potty, explain how it is used, and how to follow up when there are potty successes and potty accidents- all the while keeping a positive attitude.
We've used the findings of researchers over decades to help hundreds of families teach their children to use the potty.
Moreover, you'll also have the chance to get feedback from us personally during weekly live Q&A conference calls.
This program is designed to give you everything you need to potty train your child to use the potty independently without ongoing reminders, prompting, or treats.
We priced Potty U to be less than two visits to my office and less than 6 months of diapers. We wanted the course to pay for itself.
We also want parents to be happy with their choice in Potty U. We offer a 10 day post-purchase happiness guarantee. If you aren't happy for any reason, you can get a full refund for up to 10 days.
"Thank you so much again for your help and insights. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have had the confidence or know how to empower my daughter in this way. I used to think of potty training as punitive but now I see it as Mom empowering her children in a positive way. See potty pics of Jessie!"
When you join Potty University, we help you develop an individual plan using the latest research on child development and potty training or "potty education," as we like to think of it. Our training program teaches you how to use a four step process for helping your toddler to be potty independent in as little as 4 hours.
The program includes access to all trainings, materials, and resources, a private online community, and LIVE weekly Q&A calls.
This course is designed for parents of children 18 months and older.
Although many children may start training or partially training sooner, research shows those early learners are often among children with elimination disorders as time goes on.
To date, the findings of science indicate that children near 27 months of age do best with this play based method.
Readiness is the first undertaking the course, so if they aren't ready, we'll know AND if they aren't ready, you can plan for a time when they are.
This course teaches you how to implement the Potty University system for potty training your toddler so that he or she is independent. You'll have access to the instructors, a community, and easy to access video lessons to help you along the way.
The program is broken up into talk-over-slides video lessons and screen share tutorial walk throughs, paired with tools, checklists, and worksheets to deepen your learning. This program is designed intentionally to reduce the potty training overwhelm, teach strategies clearly and succinctly, and give you the handful of action steps you should take before moving on to the next section. **We have five modules that are released over the period of 3 weeks.**
The bulk of the work comes during first 2 weeks of the course.
All participants are encouraged to ask their questions at each live weekly Q&A call. Dr. Keating and Laura will answer them as as thoroughly as possible.
Participants are also encouraged to engage with other students in the private Potty University online community. For those looking for more hands-on support after the course, you are encouraged to contact us directly at [email protected]
The first module is open at the time of registration. Modules 2 and 3 open weekly and Modules 4 and 5 open on the third week. This schedule allows participants to successfully complete readiness tests, preparation, and implement the strategies without getting overwhelmed.
This is SUCH a good question. No good answer. I do wish that doctoral degree came with a crystal ball, but it didn't. We can't give you any absolutes.
For typically developing children, findings in research and our clinical experience indicates that they often achieve potty training within 4 hours.
What I can tell you is we've had various results with children over time- students and our own children.
Laura's two kids are 14 months apart. She trained them both at 27 months of age. Her daughter took 4 hours and her son took 2.5 hours. Laura is a potty training ninja.
My own son had issues with bathrooms, toilets, bowl movements, and I resisted training him because I believed it would be a battle. Once we started, however, he never wore diapers again, and he only had a handful of accidents in the day and a half we really focused on his training. I didn't time it, but I'd bet I was over the 4 hour mark and under 8.
A lot of the parents we work with report that between 2 hours and 2 days, they are feeling confident about their child's toileting.
No worries! Shoot us an email at [email protected] and we'll be happy to help.
Register now and ditch the diapers in 2020.
